Maria Shriver spent decades believing she understood the shape of her own family. The revelation that shattered that belief did not come from a tabloid or a stranger. It came from a woman who had worked inside their home, and the secret involved a child who had been growing up alongside her own family for years. Shriver was born into the Kennedy political dynasty as the daughter of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and Sargent Shriver.
Her uncles included President John F. Kennedy and Senators Robert and Ted Kennedy. In 1977, at age 21, she met Arnold Schwarzenegger at a tennis tournament in New York. He was a 30-year-old Austrian bodybuilder with Hollywood ambitions that most studios still doubted.
The relationship drew skepticism from some in her family. Her mother was reportedly unsure about the match, and Ted Kennedy made jokes about Arnold’s bodybuilding background. Shriver defended him, reportedly telling her mother, “You’ll see. He will never let me down.

Actress Brigitte Nielsen later said she had an affair with Arnold in 1985 before his marriage. Former child actress Gigi Goyette also described an intermittent relationship with him over several years.
In 2003, during Arnold’s campaign for governor of California, multiple women accused him of unwanted touching and inappropriate behavior. Arnold acknowledged past misconduct and apologized for parts of his behavior while disputing other allegations. Maria remained publicly supportive during the campaign, which he won. But the most damaging secret had already entered their lives. In 1997, while Maria was pregnant with her fourth child, a longtime household employee named Mildred Baena was also pregnant. Maria gave birth to Christopher on September 27, 1997. Five days later, on October 2, Mildred gave birth to a son named Joseph.
Maria knew Mildred was pregnant. She did not know that Arnold was the father. Mildred was married to Rogelio Baena at the time, and Joseph was initially understood to be his son. Arnold later explained that he did not immediately know with certainty that Joseph was his.
As the boy grew, the resemblance became increasingly obvious. Eventually, Arnold understood the truth and began providing financial support to Mildred and Joseph, but he did not tell Maria why. The secret continued for years. Mildred remained connected to the household while Joseph grew up nearby.
Maria knew the people involved but not the central fact connecting them. By 2011, Joseph was 13 years old, and his resemblance to Arnold had become difficult to ignore. Maria reportedly confronted Mildred directly. According to accounts later given by Mildred, she broke down, fell to her knees, and admitted that Joseph was Arnold’s son.
Maria reportedly responded with compassion, telling Mildred to get up from the floor, and the two women cried together. The discovery came during an already painful period. Maria’s mother died in August 2009, and her father died in January 2011 after battling Alzheimer’s disease. On May 9, 2011, Maria and Arnold announced they were separating after 25 years of marriage.
Their statement was carefully worded and did not mention the secret. Eight days later, the Los Angeles Times reported that Arnold had fathered a child with a longtime member of the household staff. The story became one of the biggest celebrity scandals of the year. Arnold acknowledged that Joseph was his son and apologized to his family.
