A newly surfaced letter is adding fuel to long-standing rumors that Marilyn Monroe was romantically involved with a member of the Kennedy family. The letter was written to Monroe by Jean Kennedy Smith, the sister of New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
In the letter, Jean Kennedy Smith writes, "Understand that you and Bobby are the new item. We all think you should come with him when he comes back east."
The wording is vague, but it could support speculation that Monroe and Robert F. Kennedy had a relationship. The two were reportedly seen together at various events in the early 1960s.
One of those events was President John F. Kennedy's 40th birthday celebration, where Monroe famously sang "Happy Birthday" to the president.
The letter is part of a collection of the Hollywood icon's belongings that will be auctioned off by Julien's Auctions in Beverly Hills in November.
Also up for auction is Monroe's nude crystal-covered dress, which is expected to fetch up to $3 million.
