The Tragic Death of Thuy Trang | The Power Ranger Who Died at 27

Thuy Trang, the actress best known for playing Trini Kwan, the original Yellow Ranger on Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, died in a car accident on September 3, 2001. She was 27 years old. Her death arrived at one of the most unlucky moments in modern history. She was buried on September 10, 2001, the day before the September 11 terror attacks, which consumed the world’s attention and left her passing largely unnoticed by the public.

Before Hollywood, Trang had survived a journey that almost killed her as a child. She was born on December 14, 1973, in Saigon, South Vietnam, while the Vietnam War was reaching its final, chaotic stage. Her father, Khi Trang, was an officer in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam, a position that marked the family as targets after the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. When the city fell, her father made the difficult decision to flee alone to the United States, hoping to later reunite with his family.

For years, Thuy, her mother, and her siblings lived in poverty and fear under the new regime, waiting for an opportunity to escape. In 1979, when Thuy was six, the family made a desperate attempt to leave by sea. They boarded a packed cargo ship along with hundreds of other refugees, heading for Hong Kong. The voyage dragged on for months, with little food and water, cramped conditions, and illness spreading through the hold.

At one point, Thuy became so ill that other passengers believed she was dead and pressured her mother to throw her body overboard. Her mother refused, fought off the other refugees, and kept feeding and massaging her daughter until the girl regained consciousness. The rescue saved her life. The family reached Hong Kong and spent time in a refugee detention camp before being granted asylum in the United States in 1980.

They settled in Little Saigon, California, where Thuy reunited with her father. She learned English quickly and excelled in school. At age nine, she began studying Shaolin Kung Fu, eventually earning a black belt. She later enrolled at the University of California, Irvine, to study civil engineering.

In 1992, her father died of cancer, a loss that deeply shook her just as she was beginning adulthood. Shortly afterward, a talent scout suggested she try acting. She began taking acting classes and, in 1993, auditioned for a new children’s show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. She was cast as the Yellow Ranger at age 19.

The series became a cultural phenomenon, making Trang a global icon. But the production was grueling, with long hours, frequent stunts, and low pay. In 1994, Trang and two co-stars, Austin St. John and Walter Emanuel Jones, demanded better pay and union recognition.

The producers refused, and the three were replaced mid-season. After leaving the series, Trang took smaller roles, including appearances in the 1996 films Spy Hard and The Crow: City of Angels. She continued to work but struggled to find steady roles in an industry with few opportunities for Asian-American women. On September 3, 2001, Trang was a passenger in a car on Interstate 5 in California, traveling with her best friend, Angela Rockwood, and the driver, Stephanie de la Cruz.

The driver lost control after hitting loose gravel on the side of the road. The car crashed, flipped multiple times, and went over a safety rail. Rockwood was thrown from the vehicle and survived, but suffered a severed spinal cord that left her quadriplegic. Trang was trapped inside the car and suffered massive internal injuries.

She died on the way to the hospital. Her family and friends held her funeral on September 10, 2001, at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California. Several former Power Rangers co-stars attended. The next day, the September 11 attacks occurred, overwhelming global attention.

For years, many fans did not know that Trang had died, discovering her passing only when they searched for her online. Her death was commemorated much later in the 2023 Netflix special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always. The film chose not to recast her character. Instead, Trini Kwan dies saving her teammate, and the story centers on her on-screen daughter.

The production used archival footage of Trang and dedicated the film in part to her memory. Her friends and surviving cast members have continued to honor her legacy. Walter Emanuel Jones has described her as his best friend, while David Yost has credited her with being a supportive ally during a difficult period on set. The official dedication in the special read: β€œIn loving memory of Thuy Trang and Jason David Frank.
