For nearly a century, the American Mafia’s code of silence held firm against every attempt by law enforcement to pierce it. That code, known as omertà, demanded absolute loyalty—before wives, before children, before a man’s own life.
The penalty for breaking it was unlike anything else in American criminal justice. Informants rarely got a simple execution. Instead, they became cautionary tales engineered to terrify generations of would-be collaborators into permanent silence.
No case illustrates that machinery better than the death of Abraham “Kid Twist” Reles. Shortly before dawn on Nov. 12, 1941, Reles lay asleep in Room 613 of the Half Moon Hotel in Coney Island, Brooklyn, surrounded by five armed New York City police officers assigned to protect him. Within hours, his body rested face-up on the roof of the hotel kitchen six floors below.
Two bedsheets had been knotted together above his open window. Four feet of wire remained coiled around the radiator valve nearby. Either the knots failed, or somebody deliberately undid them.
Forensic examiners determined that Reles struck the second-story ledge hard enough to fracture his lower vertebrae and rupture his liver and spleen. At age thirty-five, he bled internally until he died — quietly, according to investigators, making no audible cry as he fell.
This was far more than a routine gangland slaying. Reles ranked among the most consequential witnesses in the annals of U.S. organized-crime prosecutions. During earlier proceedings stemming from the notorious syndicate assassination squad known as Murder Inc., he provided sworn accounts implicating some seventy killers across multiple jurisdictions. Already four defendants had ridden the current to Sing-Sing’s electric chairs largely upon his direct accusations.
Among others whose futures hung precariously upon his continuing testimony stood such towering figures within La Cosa Nostra circles as Lepke Buchhalter (labor rackets kingpin), Albert (“Lord High Executioner”) Anastasia – reputedly running Murder Inc.’s day-to-day activities throughout greater Gotham–plus lieutenants Louie Cappola [sic] alias ‘Louis Capone’, Mandy Weis[s], et alii awaiting separate capital retrials wherein young Mr.Reless figured prominently indeed!
